6 Hidden YouTube Channel Settings Every YouTuber Should Know

YouTube’s features and settings may evolve over time. However, here are some settings and features on YouTube channels that are relevant and may be considered “hidden” or less commonly known. Keep in mind that these settings might be subject to changes, and it’s advisable to check YouTube’s official documentation for the most up-to-date information. As of my last update:

  1. Advanced Channel Settings:
    • In YouTube Studio, navigate to “Settings” in the left sidebar and then go to “Channel” > “Advanced settings.” Here, you can adjust various settings, including your country, language, and whether your channel is made for kids.
  2. Branding Watermark:
    • You can add a branding watermark to your videos. Go to YouTube Studio, click on “Settings” in the left sidebar, and then navigate to “Channel” > “Branding.” Here, you can upload a small image or logo that will appear on all your videos.
  3. Custom URL:
    • Once your channel is eligible, you can create a custom URL for your channel. Go to “Settings” in YouTube Studio, click on “Customization” in the left sidebar, and then select “Basic info.” If your channel is eligible, you’ll find the option to create a custom URL.
  4. Channel Keywords:
    • In YouTube Studio, navigate to “Settings” > “Channel” > “Advanced settings.” You can add channel keywords here, which can help your channel be discovered in search results.
  5. Video Defaults:
    • You can set default upload settings for your videos. In YouTube Studio, go to “Settings” > “Upload defaults.” Here, you can set default video privacy, category, tags, and other settings that will apply to all your uploads.
  6. Channel Sections:
    • Customize your channel homepage by adding different sections. In YouTube Studio, go to “Customization” > “Sections.” You can create sections for playlists, popular uploads, and more.
  7. Community Settings:
    • Enable or disable community features for your channel. In YouTube Studio, go to “Settings” > “Community.” Here, you can manage comments, live chat, and other community-related settings.
  8. Playlists Privacy Settings:
    • When creating or editing a playlist, you can set the privacy of the playlist. You can choose to make it public, private, or unlisted. This setting can be found in the playlist editor.

So, inside of YouTube, there’s a bunch of settings that a lot of people don’t take the time to explore. They are really important to you if you have a YouTube channel and you work as a content creator.

YouTube Advanced Settings

This is the very first setting on my list. To find it, you have to go to youtube.com/advanced_settings.

This particular area is where you add your channel keywords. This basically gives YouTube an overview of what your channel is about.

You definitely need to fill in keywords for your channel because they will help you rank higher in results, too. The other thing that is extremely important on this page is if you look where the channel recommendations settings are.

On this page, there’s a little radio button right there that you want to make sure it’s checked that says, “Allow my channel to appear in other channels’ recommendations”.

This is very important because if you don’t have checked this option, then YouTube is not going to show your videos in the recommendations section to other users.

So make sure you have checked this extremely important option. There are tons of channels that did not have this checked, and maybe they don’t even know about these settings in their YouTube dashboard.

Other settings on this page are:

  1. AdWords account linking (allows you to promote your video and access reporting).
  2. Associated website (link your website with your channel).
  3. Subscriber counts (Display or not the number of people subscribed to my channel).
  4. Google Analytics property tracking ID (explained in the next step).

Google Analytics ID

The other cool setting that is really important to you is your Google Analytics ID. Scroll Down to the bottom of the page, and you will see this.

This is the place where you actually put your Google Analytics ID to connect your YouTube channel with Google Analytics.

It’s an important and cool setting because it will give you some additional information about what is going on on your YouTube channel.

For example, it will show the times when most people are active on your YouTube channel. (So you can post the right content at that time).

It also shows you how long you retain people over time; this is a really cool thing. It will also show you user flow and tons of other helpful metrics that really matter to you.

Upload Default

Next on my list is the upload defaults. Go to Your Channel dashboard > Settings > User Default.

This one is a huge time saver for you. Basically, this upload default option allows you to set all of your settings so you don’t have to fill in everything all the time.

With this, you can actually put together a description template that you can add in there. So after doing this, every single time you upload a video to YouTube, you will get all this kind of stuff already there (in the description), so you don’t need to fill them again and again.

By this, you can add links to your playlist, your auto subscriber links and other social media stuff. This way, it automatically gets added to the description of your every video.

So you don’t have to keep it in your notepad and find it every time. So this is really a time saver for you. This setting is really helpful and massively speeds up your work if you use it properly.

YouTube License Agreements

Another setting is the Standard YouTube license, which is really important to keep your YouTube content safe.

This setting is also on the same page, upload default.

When you upload a video on YouTube, your video has a licensing option. It’s either a standard YouTube licensing or a creative common option.

By default, all your video covers come under a Standard YouTube license. To change it to Creative Commons, visit this link.

The difference between these two options is that if you have selected the Standard YouTube License option. This means you allow YouTube to show this video to the people on the platform, but you are not allowing anybody else to use that video for other purposes.

However, if you have selected the creative common option, then other people can reuse that video and upload it on their channel without any issue.

You still own the rights to that video, but other people can also use that video in their YouTube videos. So, if you don’t want other people to use your videos, don’t use the common creative licensing option because they can easily find this kind of video on YouTube and easily upload it on their channel.

Branding Page

The next option is the branding page. To access this, Go to Your Channel dashboard > Settings > Channel Branding.

You can see on many YouTube videos that they use a little logo that is fixed with the side edges of the screen.

You can put this branding watermark on your every video. You can use it as a normal logo of your YouTube channel or as a subscribe button. This is basically a call to action button (subscribe).

Community Section

These next settings are in the community section. Inside the community section, there are actually a couple of YouTube Channel Settings available, like Moderator, Ban People, and Blocked Word Lists.

To access this, Go to Your Channel dashboard Settings Community. These are basically not only settings but also helpful features. From the community section, you can add moderators to your YouTube channel.

But on this page, you can also see all of the people that you have banned from your YouTube channel. You can see if you have banned someone accidentally. This is the area where you can go and unban that person.

On the same page, you can also add your blocked words list (YouTube is very good at filtering bad words). This is basically a list of words that you can add. When anybody says or puts that word in the comment, or they say that word in a livestream. YouTube is going to hold those comments for review.

Until you manually review those comments, other people won’t be able to see those comments on your YouTube Channel. This is a good setting/option if you don’t want people to comment bad words on your channel.
